HE LOVES ME…

Do you recognize the Love Messages in your marriage?

I love my husband and I know he loves me. We are married after all- right?  I am blessed to have a husband who actually says the words, “I love you.”  But let me tell you, besides those three special words, there are plenty of ways he shows that love.  I hate to start counting the Love Messages he gives me for fear that I will miss some, but from gassing up my car to helping with the dishes, he delivers Love Messages all day long.

Right now my husband is getting ready to leave town on business.  Not only is he leaving me alone for too long, but he is leaving on my birthday.  This is a pretty big and important trip for his company with a lot of work and strees. Yes, he is sensitive to the fact that he will be gone, leaving me alone on my ‘day.’  Thus, he has decided we will celebrate before he leaves.

Traditionally he makes me a dinner of my choice and the most fantastic birthday cake you would ever eat in your entire life.  It is to die for.  And so, here is one of his Love Messages.

Black Forest Cherry Cake

2 ¼ cups flour

1 2/3 cup sugar

2/3 cup cocoa

1 ¼ teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon baking powder

1 ¼ cups water

¾ cup shortening

2 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla

Cherry Filling (see below)

1 bar (4 oz) milk-chocolate candy bar

2 cups chilled whipping cream

¼ cup sugar

Cherry Filling

½ cup sugar

3 tablespoons cornstarch

1 can (16 oz) pitted red tart cherries, well drained but reserve liquid

To make cake:

1-Heat oven to 350 degrees.  Prepare two 9-inch or three 8-inch round layer pans.

2-Beat all ingredients for cake together in a large mixer bowl on low speed, scraping bowl constantly, for 30 seconds.  Beat on high speed, scraping bowl occasionally, for 3 minutes.

3-Pour into prepared pans.

4-Bake until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean, from 30 to 35 minutes.

5-Cool 5 minutes and remove from pans.  Cool on wire racks.

Prepare the Cherry Filling

1-Mix sugar and cornstarch in 1-quart saucepan.

2-Add enough water to reserved cherry liquid to measure ¾ cup; stir into sugar mixture.

3-Cook, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and boils.

4-Boil and stir 1 minute.

5-Add a drop of red food coloring if you desire.

6-Stir cherries into filling.  Refrigerate until completely chilled.

To assemble the cake

1-Place 1 cake layer upside down on serving plate.

2-Beat whipping cream and ¼ cup sugar in chilled bowl until stiff peaks form.

3-Spread bottom layer with about 2/3 of the Cherry Filling and 1 cup of the whipped cream.

4-Place other layer top side up on whipped cream.

5-Spread with remaining Cherry Filling.

6-Frost side and top of cake with remaining whipped cream.

To top it off, peel chocolate bar with potato peeler or shave chocolate and sprinkle on top of cake.  Refrigerate until serving time.

Beautiful isn’t it.  This little cake here says “I LOVE YOU” nice and loud to me, right down to the last bite.

What are some of the Love Messages your hubby gives you?

That cake looks delicious! Thanks for sharing the recipe :D
My husbands works very very hard. We both want me to stay home with our kids and so he works extra hard to be certain that I don’t have to go out and get a job.

That is a darling picture of your hubby and the cake. The cake looks delicious. No calories? We wish.

We have a notebook of notes that we write back and forth to each other. It feels like high school but there are so many precious stories in there that I have already forgotten about which makes me so grateful that we have written them down.

But that cake … what a sweet friend!

Isn’t this going to be great to have for future generations. I mean I have old recipes of Great Grandmas of their favorite pie or cake but to have pictures of them making it, this is special.

So, can you remind Rex that my birthday is coming up?

Paul is really romantic – he is forever sending me “love marquees” with flashing lights! He is always surprising me with get aways, date nights, & together time with only me – he truly spoils me…but my favorite love messages are the contact kind – the warm embrace with his arms wrapped completely around me, a gentle kiss on the cheek, a soft touch as he brushes my hair out of my face, even the tender look as he smiles at me from across the room – I “feel” his love for me.
