Sugar and Spice by Rebecca

I don’t know what it is about my little girl.  Everything about her makes me glad she is a girl- and glad she is mine.

I know if I had a boy, I would love him just as much.  But there is something special about my sweet girl.  What is it?  What is the sweet “girl-ness” of her?

Maybe it’s how she runs around with the wand her aunt made her, telling everyone who will listen, “This is my wander!  This is my wander!”  But then, a little boy would have cute names for his toys too, wouldn’t he?

Is it her bear hugs?

Is it how she climbs up on the couch next to me so she can be on my level, puts her arm around my shoulders, rests her head on me and says, “We have a good day?”  Is it how whenever she sees a star, it is not simply a star- it is, “Look Mommy!  How I wonder what you are!”

Is it how cute she looks in a Halloween costume?  But little boys look cute in Halloween costumes too, don’t they?

Is it how her excitement shows so visibly in her face?

Is it the special relationship she has with her daddy?  How sweet it is to see him dry her tears?  But little boys have special relationships with their daddies too, don’t they?

I don’t know what it is.  What makes her so special- what makes me so happy she is my little girl and not a little boy?  I don’t know.  I have the sweetest relationship with my sweet daughter.  Would it be the same with a little boy?  I don’t know!  I don’t know what I’m missing!  But she is the sunshine of my day!

As a mother of four boys, I can tell you they are every bit as sweet and wonderful. Remember, Ryan was once a sweet little boy who loved to snuggle and whose face shown with wonder and excitement too. I had two girls who I also adored, but they definately were different in a sugar and spice sort of way. You’re just going to have to get a boy and find out for yourself.

Boys can ’sunshine’ too. But I think there is a special bond between a mother and daughter. In many ways you live your life again as you watch her and marvel at what she does and how she learns. As you were growing up you didn’t witness how things shaped you and moved you towards becoming a woman. You realize she is going to grow up to be like you, a woman and a mother. She will certainly do it differently but you have such a joy in watching her fulfill her role
